Aditi Bhattacharya and Her Endeavor to become “The Better Earthlings”

The founder of The Better Earthlings, Aditi Bhattacharya ’s story of how she founded TBE and her motivation behind the same.

“Rehearsing gratitude I believe is a life value I learned from my mother at an extremely youthful age. This will teach you that regardless of how advantaged or privileged you are, you begin valuing whatever little things you have. I was constantly urged to think and concoct my own answer for questions.

For example, when I was in std. Four, one day our teacher read out a notice that said we need to bring Rs 100 for an NGO. With that cash, they will support schooling for slum kids. I was unable to see how Rs 100 was sufficient for one’s schooling. I got back home and asked my mother for the cash and communicated my anxiety. She said why not go to each house in the neighborhood, and request some assistance. That night we gathered around Rs 7000 for this purpose. And today, I can say that that was the day my journey began.

Ahead to 2015, I got placed in an IT organization before my fifth semester. Everything was going as per my arrangement. One Day at a family function I inquired whether they knew any e-waste collectors. I had a couple of old telephones and batteries to reuse. They promptly said, “for what reason do you need recyclers? Simply throw them in the closet by Naali.” That day I had a revelation that ‘they’re not ruining nature, ‘they are us, and we are ruining it.

Before long I began with my R&D, and a year after my graduation every one of my companions left the city for their jobs. After considering everything meticulously, I decided to remain back, and start The Better Earthlings . Still, I didn’t have any business strategy nor did I have a business background.

Eventually, I began reaching out to many scrap dealers and rag pickers in Kolkata, and watched numerous environment related documentaries. By then I had made up a strong mind regarding waste classification, potential solutions, and so forth. Yet at the same time needed useful preparations. I contacted a Noida based organization called, “Code Effort” to pursue their strategy and begin gathering cigarette butts from my city, for them. I went to numerous café and bistros, attempted to assemble a group, and picked cigarette butts from the road with the scrap dealers. In any case, after every one of these endeavors, I still was not able to create awareness among individuals, I was unable to gather enough waste to support my business. I faced my first setback.

I began contemplating upon why we are generally pondering about recycling and reusing? As if that is the single solution to our waste problem. What else, and for what reason are we producing this much waste in any case? These trains of thoughts drove me to bring about a change in my course of action and focus more on counseling about sustainable practices for businesses and homes alongside offering products for the same.

• How The Better Earthlings help to diminish the worldwide waste issue?

The Better Earthlings firmly remain by the 3 R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. That is, we lessen the utilization of plastics in the family unit and help organizations go plastics free. Our items are reusable which limits the use of single use plastic items. Likewise, we reuse waste, and team up with different associations to make the Earth cleaner and greener once again.

•Why do we urge individuals to follow a sustainable lifestyle?

It changes the outlook of how you pick an item. Brands are keen, they see the needs of their clients and make changes accordingly to sell their products to you. This way we know what we need, and what we don’t.

We have additionally thought of another brand called Coochikoo. It is the first brand in Kolkata focusing on sustainable childhood and conscious parenting. We have made Coochikoo pencils by recycling local newspapers. This thus impacts the climate enormously:-

  • Zero wastage
  • Reusing newspapers
  • Expanding the life cycle of paper
  • No chopping down of trees
  • Eco-friendly and cost-effective pencils at a similar price to typical pencils.

Almost 80000 trees are cut down to make 2 million pencils. Envision the quantity of trees being slashed down to make pencils? Think about the toll it takes on the planet? Even if 30% of our youngsters pick our newspaper pencils, think about the impact it will make.
